San Diego State Head Coach Tony Gwynn has seen a number of things in his days in baseball; however something happened on April 11th that had even the MLB Hall of Famer astonished. "I've seen a lot of baseball and seen a lot of things, but I've never seen anything like that," Gwynn said. "He was as good as it gets. I don't think I'll ever see anything like that again."

San Diego State sophomore right-hander Stephen Strasburg struck out 23 batters in the Aztecs' 1-0 win over Utah to set both the SDSU and Mountain West Conference marks for strikeouts in a game and tied for the third most in Division I history (the NCAA record is 26 by Miami of Ohio's Buddy Schultz against Wright State in 1973, and Butch Mixon of LSU fanned 24 against Louisiana-Lafayette in 1959).

Despite the record setting number of K's and only allowing a single hit and one walk, Strasburg barely earned the win. The Aztecs were held scoreless until they got an unearned run in the seventh inning.

"I know I racked up a lot of strikeouts and everything, but that definitely wasn't my goal by any means," said a beaming Strasburg, whose performance was witnessed by a number of friends and family in attendence, "I was trying to get the ball in play and throw strikes. I was trying to use the defense as much as possible, but I guess it didn't work out that way."
