This
past Saturday the Georgia Southern Eagles
brought to memory the NY Knights from "The Natural"
after Roy Hobbs' team added lightning bolt patches
to their jerseys. The Eagles blistered the ball and
set an NCAA record for all Divisions hitting a jaw-dropping
14 home runs in a 26-8 win over Columbia. In all a
dozen different Eagles hit home runs, including a
stretch of five homers in six at bats in which three
were consecutive pinch-hit homers. Remarkably, despite
the record breaking offensive outburst, GSU lost the
games before and after Saturday's power display to
the Lions. On Monday, the Eagles' bats exploded again,
tallying another 22 runs, but only hitting (yawn...)
four homeruns.

Last
season James Madison boasted one of the most accomplished
and talented players in all college baseball in All-American
outfielder Kellen Kulbacki. Yet even without the star
slugger the Dukes are continuing to impress and are
13-3 (8-1 CAA). With performances akin to pitcher Jason
Kuhn's, it's easy to see why the Dukes are
still competing with baseball's best. Last week, the
Dukes sophomore retired all 21 batters he faced for
a perfect 0.00 ERA and .000 opponent batting average
in seven full innings. Kuhn also struck out six batters
in games against George Washington and Towson. After
redshirting last season, Kuhn pitched in the summer
for Herndon Braves in the Ripken Sr. Collegiate League
and led the league with 0.81 ERA.
